Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team Versus India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the ODI team following managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test recall in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a red-ball recall as Australia search for a fix to their top-order woes.
Bowling Returns and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
